Plockton Historical Society — Archives

Archives

The images in the archive have been copied from local collections many of which have been handed on within families from one generation to another. They show different aspects of daily life, including family and friends enjoying being together and the collective nature of much of the work undertaken. Most of the places are familiar to those who live here.

The collections in the archive were seen in our first two exhibitions in 2008. We are indebted to those who shared their history in this way and made it possible for there to be an archive. The images are of huge significance not only to those who lent them, but to the community as a whole.

The responses to the photographs and the reflections of the contributors themselves are also important. The connections between what people say and the stories that emerge indicate another area for development within the archive. It is hoped that oral history recording and research will become part of our work.

As the archive evolves it will provide a useful resource for the community and for anyone with an interest in local culture. Visitors whose forebears were from Lochalsh will be able to learn more about the way of life in this part of the Highlands and how it has changed. The archive will also give future generations a chance to reflect on the culture they are part of.

For the archive to provide a full picture of the social history of the area we need to collect as wide a range of material as possible. Any contributions of photographs and other documentation would be appreciated even if they are in poor condition. The originals will be carefully looked after and returned after copying.
