From Edinburgh via Dalwhinnie routes

1. From the centre of Edinburgh, head for the A90 to the Forth Road Bridge, via Queensferry Road and the Barnton roundabout. Pass the South Queensferry exit and head straight on to the bridge tolls.
2. Toll is payable only for north bound traffic (80p for car). After the bridge, the A90 becomes the M90 motorway. Continue straight on towards Perth.
3. At the first motorway interchange outside Perth, take the exit left marked Stirling and Inverness. Do not carry straight on to Perth.
4. Continue on to the motorway terminal Broxden roundabout. Approaching this roundabout, ensure that you are in the right hand lane to take the second exit onto the A9, marked Inverness.
5. Continue on the A9 to the Inveralmond roundabout. Take the second exit marked Inverness.
6. At the Bankfoot junction, continue on the A9, following the sign marked Inverness.
7. Continue on the A9 past Dunkeld, Pitlochry, Blair Atholl and over the Drumochter summit.
8. After the summit, head on to the exit for the A889 marked Dalwhinnie. Turn left off the A9 here and continue through the village.
9. After the distillery, bear left, still on the A889. Do not turn right here at the sign marked 'The North'.
10. At the junction with the A86 after the Monaliath Hotel, turn left onto the A86.
11. Continue on past Loch Laggan and through Roy Bridge to Spean Bridge.
12. In Spean Bridge, turn right and then immediately left onto the A82, marked Invergarry and Kyle of Lochalsh.
13. Continue on the A82, past the Commando Memorial, by the side of Loch Lochy and over the Caledonian Canal at Laggan Bridge onto Invergarry.
14. In Invergarry, turn left onto the A87 at the junction marked Kyle of Lochalsh.
15. Continue on the A87 past Loch Garry and Loch Loyne. Head down to the junction with the A887 and turn left here, still on the A87, direction Kyle of Lochalsh. Continue past Loch Cluny and the Cluny Hotel, down through Glen Shiel, past Shiel Bridge, Inverinate and Dornie, with Eilean Donan Castle on your left.
16. After Dornie, continue onto Reraig. After Reraig and
either: continue on the A87 until Kyle of Lochalsh. In Kyle, take the road marked Plockton. Continue on the mainly single track road to the village, taking a left rurn just after Duirinish at the bridge.
or: shortly after Reraig, turn right onto the unclassified single track road marked Plockton, Scenic Route. Carry on through Balmacara. On the hill above Balmacara, turn right again at the junction, following the Plockton sign. Pass straight on over the bridge at Duirnish and continue on to Plockton.
Route note:  The last route is shorter but at night or in bad conditions, or with a caravan or larger vehicle, it may be preferrable to take the longer route via Kyle.
