Government changes tack
The European Union has approved a request by the British Government to begin vaccination of livestock in England and Wales. The report by veterinary scientist Dr Keith Sumption, critical of the slaughter policy, has been influential in this decision. The Scottish Executive, believing that the disease is being contained in Dumfriess-shire and Galloway, has no plans at this time to vaccinate. However, it is now confirmed that a farm in Newcastleton, Borders, is infected.
